Litter Control

The Litter Control Office serves as the liaison for the Suffolk Clean Community Commission. The office is located at the Department of Public Works Road Maintenance Division, 866 Carolina Road, Permits Office/Trailer.

As its objective, the Clean Community Commission promotes public interest in the general improvement of the environment; initiates, plans and coordinates programs for litter control and encourages and placing, planting and/or preservation of trees, flowers, plants, shrubs and other objects of ornamentation; and implements programs consistent with the Keep Suffolk Beautiful Program. We accomplish our objectives through various programs offered through our office such as the Adopt-A-Street, Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt-A-Spot Programs, Neighborhood Cleanups, Clean the Bay Day, and Suffolk Recycles Day.

The Commission is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and HR Clean.

Recycling Drive & Tire Amnesty Day — March 24, 2012

Plastic Bag Recycling Drive — Ending April 22, 2012
Calling all Suffolk Public Schools! The City of Suffolk, Suffolk Clean Community Commission and Trex Company, Inc., announce the Fourth Annual Plastic Bag Recycling Drive! The participating schools will be divided into two groups: (1) Elementary and (2) Middle/High/Turlington Woods. The winning school in each group will receive a bench for their school. Great American Cleanup — April 27, 2012
The City of Suffolk, in conjunction with Keep Suffolk Beautiful, will host the Great American Cleanup Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day.

The focus on the cleanup will be (5) locations:

Friday, April 27, 2012
Shingle Creek (intersection of Factory Street and Warwick Street). - An 1800 foot long and 25 foot wide stretch along Shingle Creek will be cleared of litter and debris. Over 50 volunteers have signed up for this cleanup location. Birdsong has graciously allowed volunteers to park in their parking area at that location.
Kings Highway (from Sleepy Hole Road to Bennetts Pasture Road) - This is a challenge site due to the high traffic volume, depth of ditches, and size of debris. 1.25 linear miles of ditch will be cleaned. Volunteers are still needed.
Bennetts Pasture Road (from Kings Highway to Nansemond Parkway) - This has been classified as a challenge site due to high traffic volume, depth of ditches, and size of debris. 1.38 linear miles of ditch will be cleaned. Volunteers are still needed.

Saturday, April 28, 2012
Coulbourn Park (321 East Constance Road) - The park covers five acres and features playground equipment, a picnic shelter, and is open year round. Registration is already full at this site.
Joyner Park (206 Holladay Street) - This park covers one acre and offers two outdoor basketball courts. Volunteers are still needed at this site.

Clean The Bay Day — June 2, 2012
To sign up to participate in the 2012 Clean the Bay Day, please log onto www.cbf.org/clean. Suffolk volunteers will be cleaning up Bennett’s Creek Park, Sleepy Hole Park, Pughsville Park, Route 58 East and West and Hosier Rd. For more information, contact Crystal Boyd.
